INCREASING TENSILE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE

Problems faced with concrete:

  • Tensile strength is an important property of concrete because concrete structures are highly vulnerable to tensile cracking due to various kinds of effects and applied loading itself. However, the tensile strength of concrete is very low when compared to its compressive strength.
  • Concrete has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion, and as it matures concrete shrinks. All concrete structures will crack to some extent, due to shrinkage and tension.
  • Water is the key ingredient, which when mixed with cement, forms a paste that binds the aggregate together. The water causes the hardening of concrete through a process called hydration. The role of water is important because the water to cement ratio is the most critical factor in the production of perfect concrete. Too much water reduces concrete strength, while too little will make the concrete unworkable.

Material Used to Increase Tensile Strength

Cellulose Nano Fibres

You might be thinking what this white ugly jelly is? This white gel are cellulose nanofiber which can be obtained from processing any cellulose-rich material like cotton, algae and any other plant.

How to add ?

This are jelly type substance, that is dispersible in water. Like any other plasticizers, we can add it in concrete directly while mixing or can be mixed with water and added to concrete.

You can watch the video below to know how to add it

Usually, a very small percent of this substance needs to be added. This percent not to be added more than 3% of cement weight.

What happens after CNF's Addition

These nanofibers act as micro-sized reinforcement to concrete on addition. Moreover, it provides water to make more workable concrete without losing its strength.
